Research Assistant, CISE-Atlantic (May-August 2025)

Program: Chairs for Inclusion in Science and Engineering – Atlantic
Location: Hybrid work environment, predominantly onsite at Dalhousie, University, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Contract Duration: May 5th – August 25th 2025 (16 weeks)
Position Type: Full Time, 35 hours/week, Temporary
Salary: $18,816 (includes 12% fringe benefits), equivalent to approx. $30/hr

Job Summary

Reporting to the Program Manager and the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will support CISE-Atlantic in the development and deployment of survey and evaluation instruments. These instruments will assess the impact of CISE-Atlantic initiatives on advancing inclusion, addressing issues of underrepresentation, and creating systems-change in STEM education, research and employment.

The Research Assistant will work closely with the CISE-Atlantic team as well as regional and national Program collaborators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop qualitative and quantitative survey instruments for CISE-Atlantic initiatives, e.g., Physics in the Rural Classroom and the Work-Integrated Learning in Physics Program
  • Write research ethics applications for relevant universities and K-12 school boards, districts and regional centres
  • Ensure the integrity of the data collected through the developed survey instruments, adhering to relevant policies and legislation related to privacy, and confidentiality and respecting the principles of OCAP
  • Analyze data collected, synthesizing data and preparing reports
  • Coordinate and schedule focus group sessions
  • Organize and schedule meetings with CISE-Atlantic collaborators for social impact

Qualifications

  • Full or part-time graduate student enrolled at Dalhousie University
  • Completed master’s degree in a relevant program (e.g., MA, MSW, MSc)
  • Enrollment in a relevant STEM or social science graduate program

Valuable Experience

  • Significant experience using data collection and qualitative and quantitative analysis tools, e.g., Qualtrics, R, SPSS, NVivo
  • Experience conducting focus group sessions
  • Experience engaging with equity-deserving communities
  • Experience conducting research, data analysis and report writing
  • Experience writing ethics applications

Location: St. Francis Xavier University, Biology Department
Contract Duration: 8 weeks, 30-35 hours/week (May-June)

Funded by Dalhousie University’s Ocean Frontier Institute, the Outreach Facilitator will assist the Program Coordinator in running the X-Oceans outreach program across communities in Nova Scotia.

The Outreach Facilitator will be based at St. Francis Xavier University for the duration of the contract and accommodations will be provided free of charge to the successful candidate.
